CONFIRMATION

ST. CHARLES PARISH
IMPERIAL BEACH

Confirmation as the completion of Baptism is the sacramental sign of the gifts of the Holy Spirit by which the baptized are sealed to be more like Christ and more complete members of His church.
Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, those who have been born anew in Baptism receive the inexpressible Gift of the Holy Spirit, by which they are endowed with special strength. Moreover, having received the character of this sacrament, they are bound more intimately to the Church and they are more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith both by word and by deed as true witnesses of Christ. (Constitution on the Church, 11 and Canon 879)

DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO / * ST. CHARLES PARISH
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION: CONFIRMATION

310 Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation and its celebration is a component of the catechesis and liturgical life of adolescents, including those with special needs.

311 Candidate Readiness Criteria:

1. BAPTISM: One must be validly baptized to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
(Canon, 889.1)
* A COPY OF THE BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE MUST BE ON FILE AT THE
CATECHETICAL CENTER OFFICE *

2. DULY INSTRUCTED AND IN THE STATE OF GRACE: if the baptized person has the use of reason, it is required that he or she be in the state of grace, properly instructed, and able to renew his or her baptismal promises.

3. AGE: Fifteen is the minimum age for Confirmation in the Diocese of San Diego. (The Pastor has final say on age for a particular parish)

* AT ST. CHARLES PARISH THE AGE IS AT LEAST 16 YEARS OLD/ OR 15 AND
A SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL AT THE TIME OF CONFIRMATION *

4. PROPER DISPOSITION for reception of Confirmation should be evidenced by:
a) a stated personal desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation;

b) a willingness to more firmly witness to Christ by word and action;

c) an acceptance of the responsibility to be an active member of the Church, to continue to mature in faith, and to spread and defend the faith according to one's ability.

5. EXPERIENCE OF CHRISTIAN LIVING prior to Confirmation should be
demonstrated by:

a) faithful participation in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist;

b) a commitment to ongoing human and spiritual growth and development through prayer and good works;

c) involvement in the parish community.

312 Candidates for Confirmation are required to be properly instructed and to evidence an understanding of the Catholic faith appropriate to their age. This means that they
should have integrated all their years of catechesis and acquired an appreciation of
what the Church teaches. As a minimum, candidates are expected to show competence in the following four areas of Christian catechesis as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

- the Creed in which the Christian mystery is the object of faith;
- the Sacred Liturgy, in which the Christian mystery is celebrated and
communicated in liturgical actions;
- the Christian way of life, in which the Christian mystery is present to enlighten
and sustain the children of God in their actions; and
- Christian prayer, in which the Christian mystery is the basis for our prayer, the
privileged expression of which is the Our Father, and it represents the object of
our supplication, our praise and our intercession.

313 Each parish is responsible for developing a process whereby the readiness of individual candidates - including persons with developmental disabilities - to enter into
preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation will be determined.

314 After determination of readiness, the candidate is expected to participate in immediate short-term preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation at the parish.

315 As far as possible, there should be a (one) sponsor for each of those to be confirmed.

316 To be a Confirmation sponsor, a person must:
1. be at least 16 years of age and sufficiently mature for this responsibility;

2. be a Catholic who has been confirmed, has already received First Eucharist
and is leading a life in harmony with the faith and role to be undertaken;

3. not be one of the candidate's parents; and

4. not be prohibited by law from exercising the role of sponsor.

SPONSOR INFORMATION

315 As far as possible, there should be a (one) sponsor for each of those to be confirmed.

316 To be a Confirmation sponsor, a person must:

1. be at least 16 years of age and sufficiently mature for this responsibility;

2. be a Catholic who has been confirmed, has already received First Eucharist and is leading a life in harmony with the faith and role to be undertaken;

3. not be one of the candidate's parents; and

4. not be prohibited by law from exercising the role of sponsor.

It is desirable that the godparent at Baptism also be the sponsor at Confirmation.

This expresses more clearly the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation and also

makes the function and responsibility of the sponsor more effective.

Mindful that each candidate may have only one sponsor, sponsors should be chosen

because they are willing and able to help those to be confirmed to faithfully fulfill their

baptismal promises under the influence of the Holy Spirit. If members of the same parish

or locality, they should be ready to oversee or assist in the adequate formation of the

candidates and guide the newly confirmed to an active role in the life and mission of the

local faith community.

SPONSOR EXPECTATIONS

1. Meet with the candidate and discuss faith issues. There are questions designed especially for this in the Apprentice Program Manual for Confirmation Sponsors. This gives the sponsor an excellent opportunity to share their faith with the candidate.

2. Show support through prayer and good works.

3. Share their own faith journey with the candidate.

4. Be a role model through the example of their life as an adult Catholic, especially
through weekly participation in the Sunday celebration of Eucharist.

5. Participate in the following:
- the candidate/sponsor evening of prayer
- the Confirmation rehearsal
- the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation.

SECTION 1
UNDERSTANDING OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH

312 Candidates for Confirmation are required to be properly instructed and to evidence
an understanding of the Catholic faith appropriate to their age. This means that
they should have integrated all their years of catechesis and acquired an appreciation of what the Church teaches.

As a minimum, candidates are expected to show competence in the following four areas of Christian catechesis as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

1. - the CREED in which the Christian mystery is the object of faith;

THE APOSTLES' CREED is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles' faith. It's great authority arises from this fact: it is "the Creed of the Roman Church, the See of Peter, the first of the apostles to which he brought the common faith. (called creed because the first word in Latin is credo - "I believe")

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.

CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son
our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin
Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge
the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.

DOCTRINE

- that the one, all-powerful, all good, and infinite God in whom we believe consists in the mysterious unity of three equal and co-eternal Divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son who is our Lord Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit;
the Holy Trinity

- that God the Father created us as good along with all things in the universe, and loves and cares for us and for all His creation;

- that God the Father, as a remedy for human sin and rebellion, out of love sent His only Son to save us;

- that God the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, was sent by the Father to become one with us in taking on a complete human spirit, soul and body;

- that by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ was miraculously born of a virgin, Mary of Nazareth;

- that Jesus saved us from sin and death through offering to the Father His own life in our place, dying painfully on a cross in Judea in the first century, when sentenced to death by a Roman official, Pontius Pilate;

- that this same Jesus, dead and buried in a tomb, on the third day after his death was raised to new life and glory by the Father;

- that the risen Christ Jesus returned to the side of the Father, and now reigns as Lord of heaven, the God-Man who, at the end of time, will return to earth to judge how fruitfully each human person has lived;

- that God the Holy Spirit was sent by the Father and Jesus His Son to live among us, to swell in our hearts and minds and share God's love and truth with us, leading and guiding us to the Father through Christ Jesus;

- that the Spirit unites us to Jesus and to each other as His Body, His People, and His Church, forming us into a communion of saints who love and serve God and one another both on earth and in heaven, until Christ comes again;

- that we are forgiven when we turn away from sin and join ourselves to the Lord Jesus through Baptism, the Eucharist, the other sacraments, and by seeking to faithfully follow His way of life;

- that through the action of the Father, Son and Spirit, we will one day be raised bodily like Jesus to share eternally in the life of the Holy Trinity.

- I believe

2. - the SACRED LITURGY, in which the Christian mystery is celebrated and
communicated in liturgical actions;

LITURGY - The word "liturgy" originally meant a "public work" or a "service in the name of/on behalf of the people." In christian tradition it means the participation of the people of God in "the work of God." Through the liturgy Christ continues the work of our redemption with and through his Church.

PASCAL MYSTERY (Passover Mystery) - The Church believes in the celebration of the saving work of Jesus in a sacred commemoration. Once each week on the
Lord's Day the Church keeps the memory of the Lord's resurrection. In the course
of the year, the Church unfolds the whole mystery of Christ.
- The Paschal Mystery (the Mass)
Liturgy of the Word
Liturgy of the Eucharist

LITURGICAL YEAR - In the liturgical year the various aspects of the mysteries of
Christ unfold. In celebrating this annual cycle we commemorate the beginning of
our salvation and its fulfillment in the Passover of Jesus and the outpouring of the
Holy Spirit.
- the Liturgical Year
Advent
Christmastime
Ordinary Time
Lent
Triduum
Eastertime
Ordinary Time

SACRAMENTS - The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the
Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. Sacraments are effective signs of grace,
instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is given to
the faithful. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify
and make present the graces suitable to each sacrament.
- the seven Sacraments of the Church
Baptism
Eucharist
Confirmation
Reconciliation
Anointing of the Sick
Matrimony
Holy Orders

3. - the CHRISTIAN WAY OF LIFE, in which the Christian mystery is present to
enlighten and sustain the children of God in their actions;

BEATITUDES - The Beatitudes are at the heart of Jesus' preaching. They depict the countenance of Jesus Christ and portray his charity. They shed light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian life.

- the BEATITUDES Matthew 5:1-12

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are the sorrowing, for they shall be consoled.

Blessed are those of low status; they shall inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for holiness,
for they shall have their fill.

Blessed are they who show mercy, for mercy shall be theirs.

Blessed are the single-hearted, for they shall see God.

Blessed, too, are the peacemakers, for they shall be called
children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of holiness, for the kingdom of god is theirs.

MORALITY/MORAL CONSCIENCE -Because we are members of the Body whose
Head is Christ, Christians contribute to building up the Church by the faithfulness
of their convictions and their moral lives. The Church increases, grows, and
develops through the holiness of the faithful.

SOCIAL JUSTICE - Society ensures social justice when it provides the conditions
that allow associations or individuals to obtain what is their due, according to their
nature and their vocation. Social justice is linked to the common good and the
exercise of authority.

TEN COMMANDMENTS - The gift of the commandments is part of the covenant
God sealed with his people. They express the implications of belonging to God
through the establishment of the covenant. They express man's fundamental duties
towards God and towards his neighbor. Obedience to the Commandments is
unchanging.

- the PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH

The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life
bound to - and nourished by - liturgical life. The mandatory character of these
positive laws is meant to guarantee to the faithful the necessary minimum in the
spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor:

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

-requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord, and participation in the principal liturgical feast which honor the mysteries of the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and the saints.

4. - CHRISTIAN PRAYER
, in which the Christian mystery is the basis for our prayer, the
privileged expression of which is the Our Father, and it represents the object of
our supplication, our praise and our intercession.

"Great is the mystery of faith!" This mystery requires that the faithful believe in
it, that they celebrate it, and that they live from it in a vital and personal
relationship with the living and true God. This relationship is prayer.

- Blessing and Adoration
- Prayer of Petition
- Prayer of Intercession

his disciples.'" (Luke 11:1) In response to this request the Lord
entrusted to his disciples and to his Church the fundamental
Christian prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
"OUR FATHER!"

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
OUR FATHER

Our Father, who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name;

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

relationship to God as Father;

- that through Jesus we become children
of God destined to share in His
Kingdom;

- that the Kingdom of God as the
expression of God's will for us is the
object of Christian hope;

essential element of the Gospel message
and that Christians must mirror that
forgiveness in their own lives;

SECTION 3
PROPER DISPOSITION

311 Candidate Readiness Criteria:

4. PROPER DISPOSITION for reception of Confirmation should be evidenced by:

a) a stated personal desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation;

b) a willingness to more firmly witness to Christ by word and action;

c) an acceptance of the responsibility to be an active member of the Church, to continue to mature in faith, and to spread and defend the faith according to one's ability.

-PROPER DISPOSTION

The Confirmation candidate will write a letter to Fr. Fernando Ramirez, the pastor of St. Charles parish. This letter provides an opportunity for the
candidate to show their commitment to the Catholic faith. It is also a means by which Fr. Dennis can come to know the youth of the parish. Fr. Ramirez will present the candidates to the bishop during the Confirmation liturgy. It is fitting that he receive the testimony of each candidate's personal desire to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.

The letter to Fr. Ramirez should be typed, (double spaced) and include the
